The British Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857)
developed in 1806 the wind scale named after him, to determined the different strengths of the
Air movements by visual signs.
He said the wind strengths for the land and sea are visible in 12 steps -
expanded in 1949 to 17 steps - that of "calm" to "hurricane" certain
Designations contained.
